‘And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be FILLED with the SPIRIT.’
The fullness of the Spirit is contrasted with drunkenness.
DRUNKENNESS FULLNESS OF THE SPIRIT
Takes away sound judgment…………………. Makes us prudent and discerning
Makes us reckless and potentially destructive….. Makes us helpful and profitable to others
Makes us lose our self-control……………… Heightens self-control… a fruit of the Spirit
Creates problems for us……………….. Makes us useful for God
Is debasing and shameful……. Dignifying and glorifying to God
Comparing Scripture with Scripture we find that the phrase ‘filled with the Spirit’ is about the special practical influence and enablement of the Spirit that God gives His people so they might DO what He wants them to do… in their everyday lives.
