Good Works #3 – Acceptable and Unacceptable Good Works

What Kind of Works Does God Accept? 1st – Good Works of Believers (Para 6) – God accepts (and rewards) only works of faith which are done by believers through Jesus Christ, by the Spirit of Christ and for the glory of Christ – Eph 1:6-8… Matthew 16:27 2nd – Not The Works of Unbelievers (Para 7) – all the works done by unconverted men are unacceptable to God… Martin Luther – ‘splendid sins.’ (1) UNBELIEVERS MAY SOMETIMES DO ‘GOOD THINGS’ – works that are helpful and beneficial to others or to society (example: 2 Kg 10:30-31; Mt 7:21-23). But, these works cannot please God because; (a) Their heart is wrong – they are not works of faith – Romans 14:23; Matthew 15:7-8; Hebrews 11:4-6; Titus 1:16. (b) The motive is wrong – they don’t do it with a sincere love to Christ and our fellow man – 1 Corinthians 13:3; 1 Samuel 15:22 (c) The purpose is wrong – the purpose for all good works—is GOD’S GLORY – Matthew 5:16 (2nd) NEGLIGENCE INCREASES THE JUDGMENT OF THE UNGODLY – Matthew 25:41-45; Luke 12:47-48.
