1st – CONTINUING AUTHORITY OF GOD’S MORAL LAW – ‘Obedience to the moral law remains forever binding’ – because God made us, and He has the right to set the standard of obedience – Matthew 5:17-20… Luke 16:14-18).
Sam Waldron, Modern Exposition (p.240) – ‘…the Confession asserts the fundamental truth that the obligation to obey the law is an inherent and unavoidable part of human existence. In other words the law binds men forever, whether justified or unjustified, simply because as creatures, they owe such obedience to their Creator.’
2nd – SCOPE OF THE AUTHORITY OF GOD’S MORAL LAW – ‘Forever binding upon both justified persons and all others…’
(1) APPLICABLE TO ALL UNCONVERTED PERSONS – all those people (religious, irreligious, idolatrous, or indifferent) – Romans 3:19,23… Matthew 19:16-22
(2) APPLICABLE TO ALL JUSTIFIED PERSONS – all who have believed on Christ and have received God’s forgiveness, are accepted as perfectly righteous by God because of Jesus Christ—but we are still bound to obey God’s moral standard of right and wrong – Romans 3:24-28,31… 1 Corinthians 9:19-21… 7:19… Ephesians 4:24-28… 5:1-6… 6:1-3… Romans 13:8-10
