In 1932, John Mackay, a Presbyterian missionary to Peru published a book entitled, The Other Spanish Christ: a study in the Spiritual History of Spain and Latin America. The book chronicles the horrific story of the Spanish conquistadores, who slaughtered, enslaved, colonized and then “converted” the native people of Latin America.
Mr. Mackay writes – The picture of Jesus that Spanish Catholicism introduced to Latin America “was the figure of tragedy… (the Christ of Latin America) stands before (them) as a tragic victim… In Spanish religion Christ has been the centre of a cult of death, a Christ known in life as an infant and in death as a corpse, over whose helpless childhood and tragic fate the Virgin mother presides.”
Jesus was not a tragic victim when He suffered and died on the cross—He was a WILLING SAVIOR… Jesus gave Himself for us as, “an offering and a sacrifice to God” … and after three days in the tomb… the Lord Jesus conquered death…
