Saving Faith #1 – What Is Saving Faith?

John Murray, Redemption: Accomplished and Applied (p.112) – ‘…the essence of SAVING FAITH is to bring the sinner lost and dead in trespasses and sins into direct personal contact with the Saviour himself, contact which is nothing less than that of self-commitment to him in all the glory of his person and perfection of his work as he is freely and fully offered in the gospel.’ S. Waldron, Modern Exposition of the 1689 Confession (pp.186-87) – SAVING FAITH ‘is the believing abandonment of ourselves to Christ against all issues…and the consigning of our whole destiny into the hand of Jesus Christ…(saving faith) is a whole-souled conviction of the truth leading to a commitment to the Christ of the gospel.’ Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology (p. 710) – ‘SAVING FAITH is trust in Jesus Christ as a living person for forgiveness of sins and for eternal life with God. This definition emphasizes that saving faith is not just a belief in the facts, but a personal trust in Jesus to save me… The word “trust” is a better word to use in contemporary culture than the word “faith” of “believe.” We can “believe” something to be true with no personal commitment or dependence involved in it.’ John Piper, Desiring God (p.55) – ‘SAVING FAITH is the confidence that if you…forsake all sinful pleasures, the hidden treasure of holy joy (in Jesus Christ) will satisfy your deepest desires… Saving faith is the heartfelt conviction not only that Christ is reliable, but also that He is desirable.’
