The Work of Christ

Chapter 8 – Christ Our Mediator The Work of Christ (Paragraphs 3-4) This chapter of the Confession concentrates upon the all-important Doctrine of Jesus Christ… but notice that the emphasis is not upon Jesus Christ as a Savior, but Jesus Christ as a Mediator. Why? Because we not only to be saved from our sins—we need to be reconciled unto God (see; Col 1:19-22). ‘Christ is our Mediator by suretiship…(that is) in a way of satisfaction, coming under our obligation to answer the law; this He did on the cross… The very design and end of this mediation was to make peace by giving full satisfaction to the party that was wronged… And for any now to imagine to reconcile themselves to God by anything but faith in the blood of this Mediator, is not only most vain in itself, and destructive to the soul, but most derogatory to the wisdom and grace of God… He therefore, that is to be a mediator of reconciliation between God and man must pay a price adequate to the offense and wrong; and so did our Mediator.’ – John Flavel, The Fountain Of Life (Vol.1, pp.109-111)
