1689 Baptist Confession of Faith – Chapter 6 – The Fall of Man and Sin
Total Depravity (Paragraphs 3-5)
Total depravity – in other words, all mankind is completely corrupt and morally twisted and deformed… corruption that extends to our whole being (Romans 3:10-23… 8:7… Isaiah 1:5-6… Genesis 6:5; 8:21).
Total depravity is the teaching that all mankind in and of themselves are guilty, hell-deserving sinners—unable and unwilling to know God, desire or love God… to come to God or obey God. –Jeremiah 17:1,9 … Ephesians 2:1-3.
John Piper – ‘…if all men are in total rebellion, everything they do is the product of rebellion and cannot be an honor to God, but only part of their sinful rebellion. If a king teaches his subjects how to fight well and then those subjects rebel against their king and use the very skill he taught them to resist him, then even those skills become evil. Thus man does many things which he can only do because he is created in the image of God and which in the service of God could be praised. But in the service of man’s self-justifying rebellion, these very things are sinful.’
